Photo slideshow vs AI growing video: which one fits your event?

In short

A photo slideshow shows still photos one after another with slow zooms and crossfades. It is free or cheap, gives you full control and works with any kind of photo, but a good one takes hours to edit. An AI growing video turns each photo into the next, so you watch one person grow in continuous motion with no editing, for a one-time fee, and it works best with clear faces of the same person. For group photos, documents or a zero budget, a slideshow is the better choice; for the story of one person over the years, a growing video is.

Photo slideshow vs video: what is the actual difference?

Most people looking for a photo slideshow for an event want the same thing: family photos, a song that matters, and a big screen at the venue or the TV at home. The difference between the two formats is what happens between the photos.

In a classic slideshow every photo stays still. The software pans or zooms it a little, then swaps to the next one with a crossfade or a cut. In an AI growing video there is no transition between photos at all. The model takes two consecutive photos and generates five seconds of motion in which the first becomes the second, and the person ages along the way. Chain those clips and you get one video with no cuts. The full explanation is in what an AI growing up video is.

What does a classic photo slideshow do well?

The slideshow has been around for decades for good reasons. It accepts any photo in any condition and lets you decide everything.

  • Free or close to it. Plenty of free editors on phones and computers add slow zooms (the Ken Burns effect), crossfades and music.
  • Full control. You decide how long each photo stays on screen, where the chorus lands and which text appears when.
  • Any photo works. Group shots, landscapes, a wedding invitation, a diploma, a handwritten letter. Nothing needs to recognise a face.
  • No surprises. What is in the photo is exactly what appears on screen. No machine is interpreting anything.

The cost is time. A slideshow that looks polished, with pacing that follows the song and transitions that do not repeat, usually takes a full evening and often more. And even a well made one is still a sequence of frozen moments.

What does an AI growing video do differently?

A growing video is built around one person. You upload their photos in order, from childhood to today, and each pair of consecutive photos becomes a five second clip. A one year old turns into a four year old in one continuous movement, then into a teenager, then an adult. No fades, no cuts, and that is usually the moment a room goes quiet.

  • No editing. There is no timeline to drag clips around on. You choose photos, order, opening, music and titles, then click once.
  • Length follows photo count. 13 photos make one minute, and each extra minute needs 12 more. The full math is in how many photos you need.
  • Extras are built in. On Memvivo every video starts with a cinematic opening of about five seconds with the person's name, plus a closing card, a caption per clip, and music: your own file, the library, or an original song written about them.
  • Cost. It is a one-time purchase based on video length, with no subscription. Current prices are on the pricing page. The first animation is free, no credit card.

When is a slideshow the better choice?

Not every event needs an AI video. In some cases a slideshow simply fits better, and it is worth saying so plainly:

  • Lots of group photos with different people. A growing video needs the same person, or the same couple, in consecutive photos. If the album is mostly friends, trips and class photos, a slideshow tells that story better.
  • Documents, letters and places. A diploma, an invitation or the house they grew up in will not turn into a person. In a slideshow they fit right in.
  • A very tight budget. If there is no budget at all and you have a free evening, a free slideshow is a sensible choice.
  • You want to control every second. Experienced editors who want each photo timed to a lyric will feel more at home in an editing app.

Mixed set with different people in each photo? Memvivo also has a Classic style: each photo is animated on its own with gentle motion, then the clips are stitched into one video. It sits between a slideshow and a growing video.

What are the limits of an AI growing video?

AI is good at moving between two photos of the same person, but it is not perfect. Know this before you start:

  • Clear faces work best. Tiny faces in the frame, sunglasses or a sharp profile can make a transition look less natural.
  • Very large age gaps between two consecutive photos are harder for the model. A few in-between photos smooth the path.
  • Many people in frame confuse the model. A couple works well, and Growing style keeps each of the two identities. A big group does not.
  • Not every clip lands on the first try. You regenerate a weak transition with a different motion. Every pack includes a bank of free retries, so you do not pay again.

Old or scanned photos get automatic face restoration before animation. No scanner? The guide to scanning old photos with your phone shows how to shoot prints properly.

How do you decide for your event?

  1. Ask whose story it is. One person or one couple across the years points to a growing video. Many people, places and moments point to a slideshow.
  2. Count your photos. Gather the photos you have of that person, one per period. If at least 13 show a clear face, you have enough for a one minute video.
  3. Be honest about time. A free evening and no budget point to a slideshow. A busy week before the event points to a video that builds itself.
  4. Try before deciding. On Memvivo the first animation is free. Upload two photos of the same person at different ages and see how it looks with your own photos.

Common questions

Can I include group photos in a growing video?

Yes, but sparingly. A transition works best when the same person, or the same couple, appears in both consecutive photos. One group photo where they are clear and close to the camera usually works. If most of your photos are group shots, Classic style or a regular slideshow will fit better.

Does an AI video look fake compared to a slideshow?

The motion is generated by the model, so it is not a record of a real moment. The start and end of every clip are your real photos. When the photos are clear and the age gap is not extreme, the result looks natural. A transition that looks wrong can be regenerated with a different motion.

How long does each one take to make?

A good slideshow usually takes an evening of editing, sometimes more. With a growing video most of the time goes into gathering and choosing photos. Clips start generating while you upload, and most families finish a whole video in under half an hour.

Can I use the same song either way?

Yes. On Memvivo you can upload your own music file, pick from the library, or ask for an original song written about the person. Changing the music and recompiling the video are included.

What file do I get, and will it play at the venue?

A 1080p MP4. The 16:9 format fits the screen at a venue and a TV, 1:1 fits Facebook, and 9:16 fits Stories and Reels. The same file plays at the event and goes out on WhatsApp.
